Frequently Asked Questions

What is St. John's Conservatory of the Arts?

We offer music lessons rooted in a Christian environment, welcoming students of all ages and skill levels with the philosophy that everyone is musical and can benefit from music instruction.

What instruments do you offer lessons for?

We offer private lessons for the following instruments: piano, voice, organ, guitar, drums, and violin.

Do you offer group classes in addition to private lessons?

Yes, we offer beginning piano classes through the SAC enrichment program and summer classes for preschool through 2nd grade.

What does tuition include?

A 30-minute weekly private lesson, participation in performance classes, recitals and other performance opportunities, a music tote bag, and a Practice Journal.

Is there a registration fee?

Yes, a $50 registration fee is charged per year, in addition to monthly tuition.

How is tuition billed?

Tuition is collected through MakeMusic Studio, the Conservatory's billing and scheduling software. Tuition is charged at the beginning of each month and covers 9 months per year, factoring in holidays and typical absences. Summer lessons are sold separately from the regular 9-month tuition.

How do I discontinue lessons?

Please give 30 days' notice so the Conservatory has time to fill the vacated lesson slot with a new student.

What happens if my child misses a lesson?

Tuition reserves a weekly lesson time, so make-up lessons generally aren't offered for missed lessons. Please notify your teacher and the Conservatory Director 24 hours in advance. Online lessons are also an option during your regularly scheduled lesson time.

What if the teacher has to miss a lesson?

Every effort is made to make up the lesson with the regular teacher or a substitute.

Do I need to own an instrument to start lessons?

Yes, it is recommended that students have an instrument to practice on at home. We partner with Bertrand’s Music in Mission Viejo for instrument rentals. For piano, beginners can start with a digital keyboard and will be given information at their first lesson on what to purchase if guidance is needed.
