The drums and horns in J. S. Bach’s Cantata #79 Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild (“God the Lord is Sun and Shield”) bring to mind the hammer-blows on the Wittenberg Castle Church door in 1517. Among the spiraling untruths and misdeeds of the world, we can find the same solace J. S. Bach found as he was writing this stirring music: the solace of real truth. God protects us and shines as the light of truth – that is, the truth of His Word. The familiar “Now Thank We All Our God” hymn makes an appearance in this cantata – then, we hear “A Mighty Fortress” in the triumphant final movement of Mendelssohn’s “Reformation Symphony”.
