Requiem (Gabriel Fauré) and Actus Tragicus (Bach)
Cathedral Singers, soloists, string orchestra, harp, and baroque recorders
Sunday, March 23
4:00pm
We present two choral masterworks, both with themes of hope, love, and resilience. Fauré’s Requiem, a work of staggering beauty, is the centerpiece of the concert. Deep viola and cello sounds blend with the graceful harp, the pure tones of solo vocalists, and the dynamic sound of the full choir. More of Fauré’s music (Sicilienne, Cantique de Jean Racine) also fills the Sanctuary this afternoon. And, the other featured work, Bach’s Actus Tragicus (BWV 106), also known as Gottes Zeit ist die Allerbeste Zeit (God’s Time is the Very Best Time), is a masterpiece of perfect unity between text and music, with text that grapples with the very meaning of life, the anticipation of death, and the covenantal promise of eternal life.
