Focus

Posted by Family Ministries on with 8 Comments

As I sit here, bleary-eyed from staying up too late watching the election returns, my mind is full of thoughts regarding the historic events of this week. My heart and my mind struggle with the reality that some are elated, some are discouraged but for all, life has changed. Or has it? Has one election truly changed the course of our nation? My feelings are two-sided: in the limited short-term perspective of our humanly view, yes; in the face of eternity, no. The question I pose to myself and to you is, what is your perspective? What will you choose to focus on?

Has one election truly changed the course of our nation?

This dual fact of living on earth with an eternal view makes this thought complicated at times. If I focus on today, I may wander off into the dangers of thinking “this is it,” whether “it” is good or bad. I may think that our country’s future, our children’s future and even the world’s future is dependent on what has happened this week. And depending on your thoughts this may be something to look forward to with excitement or something to dread. But honestly, both views are myopic at best.

When viewed through the lens of scripture, we can take hold of the comfort that comes from our almighty, sovereign God who is neither surprised nor indifferent to these events. We pray in the Lord’s prayer, “thy will be done” and in those four words there is eternal and daily comfort, peace and assurance that God is lovingly, perfectly in control of all things. Paul wrote to the church in Corinth:

“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” 1 Corinthians 4:18.

So my friends, join me in seeking God’s perspective in not just this election but in all aspects of life. I choose to rest in the comfort and confidence that God is on the throne and nothing man can do will alter that.  I choose to be still and know that (He) is God! Some trust in horses some in chariots but we trust in the name of the Lord our God! Psalm 20:7 Let’s focus on that!

You exude the same quiet, calm confidence you did all through the election..that He is in control and we just trust Him. Beautifully written, honey. I can almost hear you talking.
