A Transition From Preparation to Construction

Posted by St.Johns Orange on

This week begins the movement from preparation and demolition to new construction and installation.

Exterior:

Work has begun in earnest to install the seismic fastening system to secure the bricks to the wood structure underneath.  This entails a detailed process of identifying the correct anchor points, removing grout in sections every 2 feet up the walls, and installing the anchor system.

We received approval from the City of Orange preservationist for the new mortar, method of cleaning the bricks, and the paint that will be applied to all exterior wood surfaces.  It is exciting to be at this point as the work is moving forward at full speed.  The end result will be spectacular, based on the samples we have seen, and will make the Sanctuary a shining beacon in downtown Orange.

Interior:

The last of the big demolition was finished earlier this week with the demolition of the choir loft.  It was exciting to uncover the historical layers of the different versions of choir loft over the years, all the way back to the original structure built 100 years ago.  There are many great pictures on the photo stream that show this work as it progressed.

Today began the first new construction.

  • A load of lumber arrived this morning and work on framing up the new front stage area and choir loft immediately began.
  • Scaffolding is being erected around the altar in preparation for the restoration paint work that will be performed.
  • Seismic strengthening of the two towers has started.
  • Electrical and plumbing rough-ins  are well underway and will continue.

The generosity toward this important project has been tremendous. If you have not yet had the opportunity to make a pledge or gift, please prayerfully consider a contribution to Preserve the Blessing of St. John’s historic Sanctuary and Walker Hall.
