Jesus is the Bread of Life

Posted by Children's Ministry on

In a time where we limit our carbs, or where the idea of gluten makes our stomachs hurt, maybe some of us struggle when we think… “Why would God compare himself to bread?”  Why bread?  Well, at the time of the Bible, bread was one of the main sources of nourishment.  It brought the people fulfillment, satisfied their hunger.  Bread has been a symbol in the Bible of God meeting a need, communicating with His people, providing nourishment.  Bread is used in celebrating the Passover, it was brought to the Israelites in the desert in the form of Manna, and it is used in the Last Supper as Christ told us the “take, eat” His own body.  Bread is something that every culture knows.  Every culture has a form, whether it be a loaf, a dumpling, naan, tortillas, biscuits, rolls…

 John 6:48-51New International Version (NIV)

48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

For this I AM we looked at the story of Jesus feeding the Five Thousand with a few loaves of bread and a fish. The story says the people were hungry.  They had a need. They didn’t say “yeah lunch sounds good, I could eat a little something.’” They were hungry.  In this moment Jesus finds somethings small with a willing heart this boys shares his lunch and from that Jesus meets the need. He feeds the people both by filling their bellies but by filling their hearts.

Later in John 6:35 Jesus declares. He doesn’t suggest it he declares, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”

My thought is this… Jesus has just feed 5,000 people, walked on water and now is  laying the truth out for his disciples to grasp. If you are hungry for more than this life can provide I AM here. I am the only thing that will quench your hunger. My question to you at home is, “How would you respond?”

Now, I have to wonder.  I wonder what about the boy? You know the boy who shared his lunch? We don’t get to follow him home, hear about how this moment affected him and who he grew up to be.  I have to imagine having an encounter with the Living God, being able to share in his miracle had to stir something in him.  He isn’t present for the walking on the water or hearing Jesus’s claim but do you think he was hungry for more bread or more Jesus after this day?

From my heart to yours:

Prayerfully our children will never have to experience true hunger for food.  They will likely never know the grumbling of an empty belly after a few days without the nourishment of a meal.  We would not feed our children every 3 days.  So my point and challenge is this… “How can you feed your children the bread of life daily?”  Our prayer, my prayer, is that Sunday & Wednesday will not be the only “meals”, the only piece of Jesus, they receive that week.

Speak Life Over your Child:

Jesus is the bread of life! He alone can satisfy our spiritual cravings. Jesus is the bread that came down from heaven. If you embrace Jesus by faith, you will discover that he fills the emptiness within your life. You will be satisfied forever by the bread of life!

Have you asked the Lord for your daily bread today, and have you come to him for the nourishment of your soul?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, all praise and worship belong to you, for you give me the food I needed to satisfy my spiritual hunger. Only in Christ can I find eternal satisfaction. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
