Health Ministry demonstrates a commitment to the health and wellbeing of our congregation and our community. Focusing on the integration of physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellness (a holistic approach), the Health Ministry team provides information about healthcare, monitors those with chronic conditions, and encourages healthy lifestyles. A degree or certificate in the healthcare field is not required to serve in Health Ministry; rather, a caring heart and training focused on listening skills and health promotion. We emphasize the spiritual dimension as central to health ministry: all persons are sacred and deserve to be treated with respect, dignity and justice.
Health Ministry serves you best when it is tailored to the needs of the congregation and the community. You can help us to determine the health needs and interests of St. John’s by completing the Health Ministry Survey. You can also indicate your interest in serving in some of the activities that many health ministry programs offer, such as:
Health-related articles such as “HealthNotes” in newsletters or bulletins
Grief and loss outreach
Shut-in visits to the homebound, and those in nursing homes, board & care facilities
“Buddy” program to assist in shopping, transportation to appointments, light housekeeping, minor home repairs
Distribution of food pantry items, wardrobe donations, etc.
Education, monitoring of common chronic health conditions (e.g., blood pressure checks between church services on the fourth Sunday of each month)
Caring for care givers (respite, stress management)
CPR, first aid, parent/newborn, fitness, nutrition/weight management, substance abuse cessation, and other classes/support groups
Health and Safety Fairs, Blood Donation Drives, collaboration with other churches and community based agencies (e.g., Inter-Lutheran Emergency Response Teams – “I-LERT”).
