More Baptism Questions Answered

How can pouring water on someone do such great things? Where does the water get its power?

Baptism is not just water. It is water used by God’s command and connected with God’s Word. God’s Word and His command give the water of Baptism its power.

Why does Jesus command us to Baptize all people? Also, Why do we Baptize children?

Because Jesus loves all people and wants all people (including children) to have His blessing of forgiveness of sins and eternal life in Baptism.  The Bible says, “Repent and be Baptized, everyone of you…for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off – for all whom the Lord will call” (Acts 2:38-39)

What new desire does the Holy Spirit work in me by Baptism?

He gives me the desire to throw away the slavery of sin and to live a new life. (See Romans 6:3-6)

How does the sinful heart (or as some call it, the sinful person in me) oppose and go against this new desire?

This sinful heart tries to lead me into many kinds of evil deeds and desires. (See Galatians 5:17-21)

How does my Baptism give me strength to fight against the sinful heart every day?

My Baptism reminds me that I am a New Creation in Jesus. God loves me and all my sins are forgiven. My Baptism gives me the Holy Spirit who gives me the power to know the blessings of God and to lead a life of praise and thanks to God every day.

(See Romans 6:4, Galatians 5:22-23, Galatians 3:27, 2 Corinthians 5:14-15, Colossians 2:6-7)
